The signing of Alisson Becker has been marked as the end of Liverpool spending in this transfer window. However we think he signing indicates more could arrive.

The journalists started to drip feed the news that Alisson Becker would be the last piece of transfer business this summer before Liverpool has completed the deal. Then as soon as the deal was done Jurgen Klopp was saying the same things; don’t expect any more arrivals.

When I hear those statements, I believe them: Liverpool are not planning more signings. That is a huge blow to everyone still hoping the club would make a deal happen for Nabil Fekir. That looks impossible at this point of the window.

A more cynical view would be that the club only decided to go for Alisson after they knew they weren’t spending big on Fekir. The other side of this sudden push for the Brazilian goalkeeper is that Loris Karius was clearly not able to start the season as the Liverpool number one.

It is this pragmatic thinking that makes me believe Liverpool could be in the market for one or two more players before the transfer window closes.

The willingness to solve the goalkeeper problem should give optimism that Liverpool will move to solve two other areas of concern; center back and striker.

Liverpool have been linked to Jamaal Lascelles of Newcastle and James Tarkowski of Burnley to be a new partner for Virgil van Dijk. Ultimately I think Klopp rolls the dice with Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan. Though Matip’s injury status, Klavan’s poor pre-season and Lovren’s late return from the World Cup may open up a late window bid.

While Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah have been missing from the pre-season action, their reserves have had an opportunity to shine. And none have grabbed it. The best of the bunch has been Daniel Sturridge but Liverpool cannot count on his body holding out to be adequate cover for the front three.

Dominic Solanke has potential but his growth has been slow. Divock Origi looks to be stunted and should be sold. Danny Ings is sure to leave. I can see Liverpool making a play for a forward – perhaps even a big move if the right player became available – before we kick off against West Ham in August.
