Liverpool fans have reacted to the news that a bid for Croatian defender Domagoj Vida has been rejected.

L’Équipe have reported that a €22 million bid for Vida has been rejected by Besiktas, who are holding out for €30 million.

This is the news story that all Reds fans love to hate. The center-back has barely played outside the top five league in Europe and this rumour has basically just been sparked by one decent tournament, but it appears to be true.

Vida is also 29-years-old and would cost a fair chunk of change. Those two things aren’t normally ones you’d associate with Liverpool transfer targets.

But manager Jurgen Klopp is clearly keen to strengthen this area ahead of the new season. Aside from Virgil van Dijk, there isn’t a quality option within the team and this does need to be addressed, it’s just that some don’t want it to be with Vida. Liverpool have done such excellent work in the market this season that such a move would leave a bit of a hollow feeling. Top targets have been secured across the board, world class players signed and heads turned. Signing an expensive defender edging into the twilight of his career could put a pin in the good feeling around Anfield.

It’s been reported that Everton and West Ham also want the Croatian. They should be left to him and young talents like Joe Gomez given the time to develop. If Klopp moved Gomez to a more central position, it would open the door for Nathaniel Clyne to get his Reds career back on track after an injury disrupted 2017/2018.

Meanwhile, striker Divock Origi has been linked with a massive €30 million move away from Anfield, which would give the club plenty of space to maneuver in the transfer market.
