Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp cracks a gag at the expense of Nathaniel Clyne but has to apologize immediately for the joke!

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp regularly cracks jokes in his press conferences. However one gag about Nathaniel Clyne today prompted the manager to offer a swift apology!

The manager was being interviewed ahead of Liverpool’s clash with rivals Manchester United in the International Champions Cup. He was asked about Nathaniel Clyne who recently left the club’s USA tour to fly home for the birth of his child.

When one of those posing questions to the manager mentioned Clyne going home for ‘another’ baby Klopp leapt on the slip as this is his only child. He made a joke that this is the only child than Clyne knows about.

On the surface it is a harmless joke but Klopp immediately apologized. The boss may have had in mind Clyne’s delicate relationships with the mother of the baby. There were reports just two weeks ago that he had been dumped by his pregnant girlfriend after being accused of cheating on her while she was expecting.

That would explain both the club’s ambiguity in their explanation of the defender’s departure from the tour and Klopp’s immediate apology after the joke.

You can see for yourself that the manager makes the joke instinctively but then has a glimmer of realization that it could be insensitive and issues the swift “sorry”.

Clyne will miss the remainder of the USA tour but will return next week to the club’s training camp in France. He is vying for a place in the first team this season with Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold after missing most of last season with injury.

Alexander-Arnold is currently the first choice right back with Gomez in a more utility role. He may get more opportunities at center back this season with Clyne returning and their being plenty of cover at right back.
