As predicted by earlier in the week, Liverpool were pretty quiet throughout the last day of the English transfer window. However, the Reds did manage to offload Danny Ings at the last moment.

Ings had been rumored with an exit throughout most of pre-season, having failed to really seize his opportunity at the end of last season.

Though a move to a potential club had seemed likely, as time ticked down towards deadline day it appeared no suitors were prepared to turn inquiries into offers.

One club heavily touted with a possible move for Ings were Newcastle United. With former Liverpool boss, Rafa Benitez, in charge at St. James Park, many were happy to see the forward make the move North-East to revitalize his career.

Unfortunately for Ings, a bid never materialized from the Magpies. It seemed he may in fact be forced to stay at the club and fight for 3rd/4th choice with Dom Solanke, at least until January 2019.

Step up Southampton. A club that has become frustrated with Liverpool over recent years for transfers in the other direction.

In the last few moments of the transfer window, the Saints struck a loan deal with Liverpool and submitted a deal sheet to the league just before the clock expired. Submitting the sheet in time gave them a precious few extra hours to complete the remaining paperwork.

At this time, the specific fee or terms of the loan for Ings remain to be seen. What is clear though, is that the striker will be leaving Anfield, at least temporarily.

Many Liverpool supporters would have preferred the club to cash in on Ings rather than accept a loan move. However, the reality is that there was either no interest in the player on a permanent basis, or perhaps more likely, no club willing to meet Liverpool’s public asking price.

A loan move to Southampton could make a lot of sense for all parties. The Saints get a player capable of scoring 10+ league goals this season, which could be the difference between staying up and going down.

In turn, Liverpool get a chance to put Ings in the shop window. Given his recent injury record, it’s perhaps little surprise they can’t find a suitable permanent deal for what they feel he could be worth.

A season of regular first team football is exactly what Ings needs. Given his horrible luck in recent years, it’s hard to begrudge him that.

Good luck, Danny! Score some goals, and increase that transfer valuation!
