Liverpool star rewarded with highest honour
Liverpool star Joe Gomez has been rewarded with the highest national honour after his excellent start to the Premier League season.
Gomez has starred alongside Virgil van Dijk in the heart of the Reds’ defence, and has helped Jurgen Klopp’s team to a perfect start to the season.
Liverpool are yet to concede a goal as they dispatched West Ham 4-0 and ground out a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace.
And that, said the Mirror, has led England manager Gareth Southgate to bestow the highest honour upon a footballer that he can – a call up to the national squad.

Southgate likes the way Gomez operates, wrote the newspaper, and will include the former Charlton Athletic man in his squad for fixtures against Spain on September 8th and Switzerland on the 11th.
England will play the Spaniards at Wembley, but will take the Three Lions show on the road and play in Leicester just three days later.
,The defender was cruelly denied the chance to play at a World Cup after picking up an ankle injury while on national duty, but Gomez is young enough and good enough to make a claim for his long-term involvement with England.
Playing alongside Netherlands skipper van Dijk can only help the 21-year-old’s development, while Gomez’s versatility will mean that Klopp has plenty of options up his sleeve when it comes to fitting the youngster in his team.
In fact, the decision to sell Ragnar Klavan was a huge statement of faith in Gomez’s ability to remain injury free and play a big part in a huge season. After spending big this summer, the pressure is on Klopp to deliver silverware, and therefor there is pressure on these players as well.
Liverpool take on Brighton on Saturday, and have just four days rest following their win against Palace on Monday night. Will Gomez survive any potential squad rotation? Southgate will certainly hope so.
