Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet says his current transfer situation is “bizarre” after learning he will be staying at Anfield this season.

The Simon Mignolet era of Liverpool Football Club looks set to continue as the club leadership insist the goalkeeper will be staying at Anfield. That will surprise many fans who had expected him to leave this summer but none are more surprised than the player himself.

Speaking to the Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws the keeper was quoted as saying: “I find it bizarre that Karius was loaned while I also had options to be loaned. But for some reason that was not possible.”

Once again Mignolet is losing out to Loris Karius. The Belgium international lost his place in the Liverpool first team to Karius in January. Now he can’t even leave Merseyside because the German beat him to that too!

Karius recently joined Besiktas on a two-year-loan that has a required purchase fee if certain criteria are met. Mignolet himself was expected to join the Turkish side but club officials determined it should be Karius who leaves.

Trying to make sense of it all Mignolet said: “A goalkeeper who was preferred to me last year may leave on a loan basis. Strange.”

However we all know why things have taken this turn of events. The Champions League final was a disaster for the German keeper. His two catastrophic errors allowed Real Madrid to win. It was clear from the beginning of preseason that his mental state in the wake of those mistakes could not allow him to continue as Liverpool number one; or even as part of the squad.

Alisson Becker is now the Liverpool number one and three clean sheets in his first three games cements that even further. But do you know who the last Liverpool keeper to do that feat on arrival at Anfield? Simon Mignolet. Funny how things turn out.
