Southampton fans love their Liverpool loan man Danny Ings as the striker scored his third goal of the season for the coastal outfit.

The Saints threw away three points against Brighton after the Seagulls came from two goals down to draw 2-2. Pierre-Emile Højbjerg scored the first of the match, before Ings hit the back of the net from the penalty spot.

Shane Duffy grabbed one back for the away side before evergreen Glenn Murray level things up with the second penalty of the game with only a few minutes left on the clock.

Unfortunately there is no chance that Liverpool will get a new, confident Ings back at the end of the campaign as Southampton will purchase the 26-year-old next season.

But there is still a good story hidden among all the goals, and no Reds fan will begrudge the once capped England international as he finds his feet on the south coast.

The former Burnley man moved to Anfield as a promising young forward, but a series of knee injuries wrecked his progression and a career on Merseyside.

After making a few token appearances at the end of last season, it was clear that Ings’ Liverpool career was over.

But that doesn’t mean the striker is a bad player – just one that didn’t really fit in with Jurgen Klopp’s plans. Liverpool also have a plethora of forwards and Ings wouldn’t have got a sniff of first team action this season.

With Daniel Sturridge, Dominic Solanke, Rhian Brewster and Divock Origi all waiting for their chance to audition for Roberto Firmino’s place there is fierce competition for places.

Whether this encouraging pattern of scoring can continue remains to be seen, but Ings has played in all five Premier League games for Southampton this season and it’s clear that manager Mark Hughes rates the forward.

In other news, Firmino will face a race against the clock to prove his fitness for the Champions League game on Tuesday after taking a finger to the eye during Liverpool’s 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

Klopp confirmed that the Brazilian wouldn’t have been fit enough to play on Monday night – but it remains to be seen whether Tuesday and PSG will be a step too far.
