Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp could be drawing inspiration from Brendan Rodgers as he shapes a new attacking formation for the Reds.

There has been much speculation around the relative struggles of the Liverpool forwards to recreate last season’s blistering form. Only ten goals in ten games for Mohamed Salah, Sadio, Mane and Roberto Firmino is a marked reduction from last term.

That is in contrast to Daniel Sturridge who has scored four goals in barely 180 minutes of football; an excellent return. That has led to many calling for Sturridge to be given a role in the first team.

The Englishman has never played his best football on the wing so many are asking for him to be given a run in Firmino’s number 9 position. However there is very little chance that Jurgen Klopp will drop his Brazilian maestro for any period of time.

Firmino is crucial to almost every element of how Klopp wants to play; he is the key piece to the attacking system. The conclusion has been that the manager needs to find a way to play both of these players. And that may lead to a change of formation.

Having two strikers often leads to a less fluid and more rigid structure; something Klopp will be loath to do. But the German boss could back into Liverpool’s recent past to find a formation that worked with two strikers and led to the best form of Daniel Sturridge’s career.

Brendan Rodgers played a front two of Sturridge and Luis Suarez to devastating effect. Sturridge stayed on the inside right position ready to curl the ball with his left foot and get on the end from crosses from left back.

Firmino could easily take the Suarez role; left of the pair, dropping deeper to win the ball and cause havoc in the gap between the opposition midfield and defense.  That would open up room for Andrew Robertson to maraud the left flank.

Rodgers had Raheem Sterling on the right side providing pace and direct running. Jurgen Klopp would have Mohamed Salah. Perhaps moving the Egyptian slightly deeper and wider would take some pressure off his shaky form.

Without a win in three games, if Liverpool lose to Man City on Sunday we could well see Klopp take some action with his formations throughout the rest of October.
