Liverpool are looking at reinforcing their faltering front line with a €20 million transfer move for PSV forward Steven Bergwijn.

The faltering start to the season for the Liverpool front three is causing much conversation and a little stress for Liverpool fans. One theory is that there isn’t enough attacking quality to rotate and rest players. It looks like the club may agree after sending scouts to watch transfer prospect Steven Bergwijn this weekend.

Sport.es claim that both Liverpool and Manchester United have sent observers to watch the PSV forward in action this season. The Netherlands Under-21 international has scored four goals and added four assists a strong start to this year’s Eredivisie.

The 21-year-old has drawn more attention after countless clubs have sent scouts to watch top prospect Hirving Lozano. The Mexican star of last summer’s World Cup is a highly prized transfer option for European clubs.

That has meant more eyes and scouts watching PSV where Bergwijn has caught the eye. He is primarily a winger operating on either flank. This year he has been played predominantly on the right-wing and would come to Anfield as a rotation option for Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptian has yet to recreate last season’s magic and the opportunity to rest him – plus add competition for his place – must appeal to Jurgen Klopp.

It is reported that Bergwijn has a €20 million (£17.6 million) release clause in his contract. That places the Dutchman as an ideal candidate for the Liverpool recruitment policy under Klopp and FSG.

He is young, cheap and talented. He would be joining countrymen Virgil van Dijk and Gini Wijnaldum as Dutchmen within a tight-knit Liverpool squad.

The only serious competition for Salah and fellow winger Sadio Mane at Liverpool now is Xherdan Shaqiri. While the Swiss star can easily play out wide, he prefers more central roles. The squad is crying out for another player who can create and produce from wide areas. Steven Bergwijn could be that man.
