Paul Merson and his captain obvious routine strikes again
Paul Merson and his captain obvious routine has struck again as the Sky Sports pundit talked about Liverpool.
After the Reds managed a 0-0 draw against Manchester City, it left them in third place in the Premier League but level on points with City and Chelsea – who all have 20.
And now Merson has made the breathtaking analysis that Liverpool would have taken this position if they were offered it at the start of the season. Clearly you’d take have taken this position, we’re nearly top of the league!
The well known pundit was joined by former Red Craig Bellamy for a meeting of the minds, and between them they managed to produce nearly no new insight into the world of football.

Yes, the team has got through a tough run and now things should be easier – but everyone knows that already. Everyone knows that Huddersfield, even away, is an easier game than Manchester City at home.
Everyone knows that a tough run of fixtures will test form and fitness. That it’ll expose the little things that can go wrong. That it’ll stretch a squad to breaking point. That shouldn’t be the role of the pundit, especially an ex-professional.
Their job should be to tell us things we don’t already know, because we haven’t played the game. They should be the ones offering up little insights that the regular fan doesn’t have access to. We don’t want the same old captain obvious routine, it’s boring.
Maybe we’re all trapped in a cycle of 24/7 news. Maybe, in a way, its our own fault because we need new content every day – and that means wheeling out the same tired lines over and over again because there is nothing else to say.
Or maybe Sky Sports should just employ pundits who can provide a higher level of service, and not just be a retirement plan for ex professionals.
