Liverpool are set to break a 40-year-old club record after gaining another clean sheet against Man City in yesterday’s Premier League draw at Anfield.

There will be much discussion in Liverpool fan circles about the state of Jurgen Klopp’s attackers after they drew another blank against Manchester City. But one thing is clear; the Reds defense is excellent and is poised to break a 40-year-old club record.

Holding Man City to a clean sheet meant that the Reds have only conceded three goals in their first eight matches. The last time Liverpool managed that was in the 1978-79 season when Bob Paisley led Graeme Souness and Kenny Dalglish to a storming first division win.

In that season the Reds went on to concede one goal in a 4-1 victory over Norwich City in their ninth game. If Liverpool can keep a clean sheet against Huddersfield then they will break that record for the best defensive start to a season in the club’s history.

Huddersfield aren’t exactly the greatest scorers in the league, managing only four goals in their opening eight games and are yet to score at home this term. Liverpool have a fantastic opportunity to grab a sixth clean sheet of the season at the John Smiths Stadium in a couple of weeks.

It really was a first-rate defensive showing against the Champions this weekend. Teams have struggled to contain Man City ever since Pep Guardiola arrived at the club in the summer of 2016. However yesterday Liverpool nullified the prolific attack and gave them precious few chances.

Joe Gomez once again showed himself a versatile and composed defender by shifting over to right back. Dejan Lovren and Virgil van Dijk also played well despite the late penalty to Man City.

If only we could press a reset button on the attack and Liverpool would surely be top of the table now rather than sharing first place with Man City and Chelsea.
