Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold doesn’t believe in fatigue as he ended a mad run of fixtures with the Reds.

The England international was speaking as he took on world chess champion Magnus Carlsen at his own game as he explicitly disagreed with manager Jurgen Klopp and pundit Gary Neville.

Alexander-Arnold and Liverpool have just finished an exhausting run of fixtures that saw them play several big games within a short space of time – and while results were initially positive, the team seemed to lose the verve and energy which makes them so dangerous.

And so it was that a win against Paris Saint-Germain turned into losses against Chelsea and Napoli and draws against Manchester City and the Blues.

But the side are still top of the Premier League and have an excellent chance of qualifying from their group in the Champions League – despite that mini upset at the hands of the Italian side.

Whatever the right-back thinks, its clear that there are some aspects of Liverpool’s game that has looked a little bit tired, a little bit leggy. The front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah aren’t quite clicking as they did last season and chances are being missed.

Maybe some time away and a little break will do them all some favours, although changes might still need to be made to the midfield – which appears to be missing the qualities of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain more than ever.

Alexander-Arnold and his teammates will now spend time away from Melwood as the Nations League hosts another two international fixtures. England play Croatia in a behind-closed-doors affair, before travelling to Sevilla to take on Spain.

There are several new faces in Gareth Southgate’s squad as Mason Mount, Jadon Sancho, James Maddison and Lewis Dunk could make their international debuts.
