Liverpool starlet Joe Gomez produced an incredibly accomplished performance as England beat Spain 3-2.

Gomez was picked to start alongside World Cup breakthrough defender Harry Maguire and outplayed the Leicester City man.

Members of the assembled press were all extremely impressed with the Reds man, who unanimously gave Gomez an 8/10 match rating.

Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate will be delighted with the way his young side played, and the fact that two international newbies formed the heart of defence that held off the Spanish onslaught bodes well for the future.

Liverpool fans won’t be surprised by the quality of Gomez’s performance as the 21-year-old has formed an excellent partnership with Virgil van Dijk.

The Guardian wrote that the England international brings more than just a solid tackle to the side – the boy can also pass, and that remains a huge asset to the side. The BBC reckoned Gomez grew into the game and displayed impressive composure under pressure.

Sky Sport’s Danny Mills was succinct with his praise for the Liverpool defender, and simply mentioned that he thought Gomez was ‘very very good.’

The progression of the starlet is very encouraging for Liverpool fans to witness. After coming back from a serious injury, the ex-Charlton man is displaying the potential that persuaded the club to spend £4.41m on him back in 2015.

Playing alongside van Dijk appears to have accelerated his development, and how Gomez performed against one of the best teams in the world shows how far he’s come in a short space of time.

The international break is now over and Liverpool will be back in Premier League action against Huddersfield on the 20th. This will be an excellent chance for the squad to put their lethargic performances behind them and rattle a few goals in against a side with a -13 goal difference.

Jurgen Klopp will be sweating on injury updates from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, but at least the defence is taken care of.
