Liverpool attacker Mohamed Salah is below Manchester United flop Anthony Martial in the latest Sky Sports power rankings.

Who are the best players in the Premier League right now? According to Sky Sports the top five includes Anthony Martial, Mat Ryan, Ross Barkley and Jordan Pickford. Stop laughing. That is what they have determined!

Sky runs a power rankings system grading stats from the last five Premier League games and gives extra points for the most recent matches. According to their system Anthony Martial – who has been a £50 million flop – is the most in-form player in the league.

He does have four goals in three league games which is his best spell and Old Trafford. However this statistical analysis doesn’t take into account the strength of opposition. While both Liverpool and United have played away at Chelsea in that span the Reds also faced league leaders Manchester City.

Mohamed Salah sits at 8th in the rankings; up a little after his opening goal against Cardiff at the weekend. Sadio Mane is back in 22nd place after his brace pushed him up the table. The only other Liverpool player to make the top 50 is Xherdan Shaqiri who creeps in at number 49 after his first goal for the club followed some assists in recent games.

There has been speculation over the last year that Liverpool could be interested in Martial should he become available on the transfer market. It is highly unlikely that the Reds would be allowed to bid for one of their rivals’ players. However Jurgen Klopp could be interested if the Frenchman’s contract is allowed to run down.

The Reds have four players who are up for the Ballon d’Or in 2018; Salah, Mane, Roberto Firmino and Alisson Becker. I didn’t see Martial or Barkley’s names on that list so perhaps the Sky power rankings aren’t the best judge of a player!
