Pundits and rival fans continue to put forth the myth that Mohamed Salah has not been up his standards for Liverpool, but this is not the case at all.

The Egyptian winger has actually preformed to a higher standard than pundits and fans alike would like to give him credit for.

Many Liverpool fans have noted the front three’s lack of ability to click and Salah‘s lack of production through the first few games. Since then, those who have watched closely have realized his recent form and the degree to which it has improved.

First off one should take a quick look at the statistics, which never tell a complete story.

Salah has tallied five goals and three assists through eleven matches in the Premier League and two goals in three UCL matches.

While one might explain this away as simply capitalizing on easy opponents, I would like to question what exactly is he supposed to do against them? Not giving a great player credit for capitalizing on weak opposition, in other words doing his job, is asinine.

By watching his performance against Arsenal one could see that he was on point. For example he was able to create a fantastic opportunity for Sadio Mané, who barely missed an opportunity that would surely have resulted in a goal.

Salah created this opportunity with a strong burst down the wing and then delivering a ball into open space.

Last season through ten games Salah recorded five goals and two assists, the same number of goals and one less assist than he has recorded this season. The point here being that he can very easily record similar numbers as last season this season as well, his start is not crippling him.

Also, Liverpool have been vastly lacking in creativity or scoring potential from the midfield, when to begin last season they also had Phillipe Coutinho.

While selling him has led to the additions of Virgil Van Dijk and Allison Becker, whom have both stabilized the back-end to a stunning degree. It also has left the front three alone to generate offense themselves.

Last season Salah was still fitting in to the EPL and Klopp’s system. This year he does not have the same talent in assisting him in generating offense from the midfield. Thus the similar numbers are certainly logical.

An interesting statistic, which demonstrates the underlying stats that show a more accurate picture of the game. Anyone who watched the game would probably concur on this fact.

The change of Liverpool’s formation since the most recent international break was from a 4-3-3 to a 4-2-3-1. Now instead of having a front three, Salah plays the role of the highest forward who is supported from the rear by a midfield usually consisting of Mané, Firmino, and Shaqiri when he is indeed in the lineup.

A similar role may well suit someone such as Naby Keïta, who has the creativity and athleticism to support the attackers sufficiently.

When compared with Manchester City, Liverpool do not have the talent in the midfield that is required to score at the rate, which Man City has. David Silva and the inevitable return of Kevin DeBruyne poses a frightening duo, ranking among the best in the world.

Salah, however, should also be considered one of the most productive wingers in the world, who can match anyone offensively. A player can be equally good to another without having the same goal or assist output.

dark. Next. How did Salah fair against Arsenal?

Salah will be instrumental in bringing home silverware to fill the trophy case at Anfield. Even if he cannot replicate last season’s magic, he can play an impactful role in a special season in the Reds’ near future.
