The FA has plans to limit the number of foreign players on each Premier League team, which could leave Liverpool in a future predicament.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the FA’s proposal says:

"Under the new rules, at least half of a 25-man playing squad will have to be made up of ‘homegrown’ players, with the number of overseas players reduced to 12."

This new set of rules is brought about by Brexit and the United Kingdom leaving the European Union. Currently, the Reds has fifteen overseas players, which would exceed the new limit by three. No matter who they are, it would be tragic to see them go because of this new rule.

On one hand, the fans appreciate the homegrown English talent, and most of them are class footballers.

If you look at Liverpool’s homegrown lads there is: Jordan Henderson, Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Daniel Sturridge, Adam Lallana, Dom Solanke, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Nathaniel Clyne. They are all talented, but the rest of the squad is made up of overseas footballers.

Those players help change the current culture of play, not just at Liverpool, but across the league. To think that the FA wants to reduce the overseas allowance by five is absurd.

They are a huge reason the Premier League is having success in Europe once again with five English teams participating in the Champions League last year. With these new possible restrictions, teams would find it hard to upgrade and compete with the tough European giants like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Juventus.

Liverpool are still active in the transfer market and will probably recruit more overseas talent in the winter or summer. The rule would not take effect until 2020, giving us time to figure out how we would structure the team ahead of the rule change.

Luckily, Liverpool has some really good young English starlets in the youth academy right now with Curtis Jones, Bobby Duncan, Harry Wilson, and Rhian Brewster all being homegrown players.

Nevertheless, hopefully this terrible change never goes into effect.
