Liverpool star Andy Robertson has gone record with a frank admission that he wasn’t up to his normal high standards for Scotland recently.

It takes a player of great character and high standards to admit when he is has not been good enough. Liverpool full back Andy Robertson is one such player and has not shirked away from the truth about his recent performances for Scotland.

The left back was recently made captain for his national side; that led to Jurgen Klopp labelling him ‘Braveheart’. In an pre-match interview before Scotland’s Nations League clash with Albania he addressed his form for his country and in particular is game against Israel:

“It didn’t happen in Israel and we owe it to ourselves firstly and then everyone round about us a performance in Albania. I came out after Israel and said my performance wasn’t good enough. But 10 of us were like that – the only one who got pass marks was the goalkeeper Allan McGregor.”

He clearly takes the responsibility of the armband seriously and was very open about his own display and claimed leadership for the disappointing result:

“I know I didn’t played well against Israel but none of us did.”

It has been a stellar rise for Robertson. This time last year he was not even featuring in the Liverpool match day squad. Alberto Moreno was the possessor of the starting left back role; the Spaniard was in his best run of form at Anfield.

An injury to Moreno opened the door for Robertson and he grabbed it with both hands. Steady improvement led to his crucial role in early 2018 during the Reds’ Champions League run.

Now he is the best left back in the Premier League, has 6 assists this season in all competitions and is captain of Scotland. These latest comments show his maturity off the field is growing at the same rate as remarkable performances on it.
