Cardiff City want to sign Liverpool defender Nathaniel Clyne when the transfer window opens up in January.

According to the Mirror, Bluebirds boss Niel Warnock likes the look of Clyne and wants to add the right-back to his squad as he battles Premier League relegation.

The two clubs have done business before as Cardiff loaned Marko Grujic for the second last of last season. Grujic ended up playing 14 times and helped Warnock secure promotion to the top flight. Their hope is that Clyne can secure their future.

This is a deal that Liverpool should make happen. The right-back has no future with the Reds and leaving a player sitting around kicking his heels is never good for the squad overall.

Capturing Clyne would be a real coup for City, wrote the newspaper, and they’re correct. Just because he hasn’t been getting games on Merseyside doesn’t make him a bad player – he’s just not the right player for Jurgen Klopp.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is. Joe Gomez is. And that’s because they are good attackers as well as good defenders. Clyne is just a good defender, and has been throughout his 99 Liverpool appearances.

But he’s played just one game this season and Warnock can clearly see that there is a top deal to be had. Cardiff would need help paying his salary, wrote the tabloid, and only time will tell if that’ll be a major sticking point.

City definitely need the help as they’ve been forced to deploy out of position players to cover right-back.

Klopp may like the security of having three right-back options in his squad, but this move would be good for all three parties and it should be pursued.
