Liverpool vs Man Utd: Peerless defence should be too much for toothless attack

Liverpool take on Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday and their defence should be too good for Utd’s toothless attack.

Much was made of Philippe Coutinho’s departure to Barcelona, but the Reds were clever. They used the considerable windfall to buy two players, and thus complete the side.

Of course Coutinho would have been an extremely valuable player this season, but really Liverpool haven’t needed him. Jurgen Klopp’s team are unbeaten in the Premier League and safely navigated (by the seat of their pants) a tough Champions League group.

And much of that is owed to Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk, the two who were brought in with some of the Coutinho money.

The pair have played an unbelievable job in transforming the Reds’ defence from average to nearly unbeatable. Liverpool have only conceded six goals in 16 league games – which includes tough fixtures against Manchester City, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.

Despite an injury to Joe Gomez and another possible one to Joel Matip, they should have more than enough to keep a poor United goalless.

Jose Mourinho is busy sowing the seeds of his own destruction, while his brand of football barely makes use of the attacking talent at Old Trafford. The Mancs have more than enough in the locker to put teams to the sword, yet they so rarely do.

They may have only scored five less than Liverpool this season, but that total is boosted by the four put past Fulham at the weekend – a side who may claim to be one of the worst ever promoted teams. They have a shambolic defence, the Reds do not.

Klopp’s team will need to be watchful, but with a spine featuring van Dijk and Alisson – completed by the near complete Andy Robertson, they should have more than enough to spot a tepid United.
