Liverpool have concluded the transfer of young striker Taiwo Awoniyi to Belgian side Royal Excel Mouscron.

The official club website has reported that Awoniyi will join Mouscron on a loan deal after his stay at AA Gent was cut short.

After signing a new deal at the start of the current season, the Nigerian international made 22 appearances for Gent before leaving the outfit mid-way through the campaign.

Awoniyi will now link up with Mouscron, where he spent the 2017/2018 season – scoring 11 goals. The Belgian league is currently enjoying their winter break and the Nigerian will resume play on the 20th of January.

You’d have to think that the youngster would struggle to break through into the first team, especially with the level of competition for places. Dominic Solanke might have departed Anfield, but Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge are still fighting for chances.

Rhian Brewster should also be considered once he recovers from injury, and even after that there is no guarantee that Jurgen Klopp won’t look to sign another forward during January or the summer.

Life for loan players is tough and Awoniyi is now experiencing his fifth temporary switch across four different sides.

With 23 goals in nearly 100 appearances in all competitions, the Nigerian is hardly a prolific forward and the case of Liverpool handing him a new deal before the initial loan move this season could be more about protecting his value.

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Ilorin born forward leaving Merseyside on a permanent deal, but stranger things have happened in football.

Liverpool are still four points clear of City at the top of the table and that can only be a good thing, but they can’t afford to let their foot off the gas.
