Liverpool have wrapped up a deal for left-sided defender Billy Koumetio from French side US Orleans Loiret.

The Reds had Koumetio on trial since November and have decided to make a move for the 16-year-old, who has previously played for Lyon.

And now the Daily Mail has reported that the left-sided defender will link up with the Academy as the U23s look to push up the table while the U18s try to win the title.

You’d imagine that Koumetio will start out in the youth side, who feature runaway goalscorers Bobby Duncan and Paul Glatzel. They are currently top of the table, and recently dismantled Accrington Stanley 4-0.

This marks another encouraging deal that shows Liverpool are intent on cherry-picking the best talent from around the globe.

Youngster Ki-Jana Hoever was signed from Ajax last season and has already featured for the first team, while there appears to be clear plans in place for a number of the brightest young talents.

Rafa Camacho has also been thrown into the senior side and responded well. His tackle against Wilfried Zaha in the dying moments of the close win against Crystal Palace was absolutely crucial – and Jurgen Klopp knows it.

If you’re a talented young player, Liverpool would be an ideal destination. Just like Arsenal under Arsene Wenger, players can trust that if they’re good enough they’ll get a chance in the side.

Klopp has a clear history of bringing through youth – and the struggles of players like Callum Hudson-Odoi shows how important it is to have a clear pathway to the first team.

It may be a few years before Koumetio is featuring at Anfield in front of a massive crowd, but at this club he has more chance of that than anywhere else.

The future’s bright, and hopefully Koumetio can be a part of it.
