Liverpool have been in contact with Brescia about the transfer of 18-year-old midfielder Sandro Tonali who has been dubbed “The new Andrea Pirlo” by the media.

Something actually happened with Liverpool Football Club in this transfer window. After weeks of rumors and non-stories it appears that the Reds have made a positive towards a player; Sandro Tonali who has been labelled ‘the new Pirlo’.

Brescia owner Massimo Cellino spoke to Corriere dello Sport and said that Liverpool have been in touch with him about the availability of their 18-year-old midfielder.

Despite playing in Serie B, the Italian second tier, the silk midfield maestro has been receiving rave reviews for his technique and control of games, drawing comparisons to Italian legend Andrea Pirlo.

Juventus and Chelsea have also been tracking his development but now it looks like the youngster has also caught the eye of Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool scouts.

Many in Italy are saying Tonali is better than Pirlo was at that age. The former AC Milan and Juventus hero also started his career at Brescia but was not the polished product we remember from his Champions League and Serie A performances.

It has been noted that Tonali can play the ‘regista’ role at the base of the midfield now, whereas it took Pirlo over five years to develop the discipline of the position.

Liverpool are fairly stocked at the midfield position at present with Gini Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Fabinho and Naby Keita all vying for a place in the first team. Klopp also has Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the way back.

At present Milner’s contract will finish this summer – he may leave on a free to his boyhood club Leeds United if they get promoted to the Premier League. That would open up a space for a young, talented midfielder like Sandro Tonali to grow steadily under Klopp’s guidance.
