Failed football manager Tim Sherwood has blasted Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp because of decisions made during the January transfer window.

Sherwood was reported by Sky Sports giving his damning verdict on Klopp’s decision to let Nathaniel Clyne leave for Bournemouth on loan.

The Reds don’t have a recall option for Clyne, who has slotted straight into the Cherries’ starting XI. And because of injuries to Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold, Klopp has been forced to play James Milner at right-back.

Sherwood, who left his role as Swindon Town’s director of football in June 2017, reckons that the Reds should never have let Clyne depart Merseyside. Talking about the move, Sherwood raged: “I think it is a massive error of judgement by Liverpool.”

The right-back barely featured for the Reds this season and only started once in the Premier League – against Manchester United.

Clyne did collect a total of 18 minutes of action across three games after the United win, but he clearly wasn’t part of Klopp’s plans.

And that’s why he was allowed to join Bournemouth – for whom he’s made four league starts. Klopp clearly believed that he had better options in the squad, even when injuries started to take their toll.

Clyne isn’t a Klopp type player, especially from right-back. He’s a good defender, that you can’t deny, but the former Southampton man doesn’t do enough going forward. In 175 Premier Leagues, he’s registered just 10 assists.

To put that into perspective, Andrew Robertson has five this season while Alexander-Arnold has three and a goal. And on Monday against West Ham, Milner provided the cross for Sadio Mane to score. Would Clyne have been able to do that?

Sherwood wants to see Klopp keep players who are unhappy at the club purely for squad depth purposes, but that’s not how the German operates. He wants happy people, who tend to perform better.

It might not be ideal, but in two weeks this whole issue will have blown over while Clyne gets his career back on track thanks to a compassionate manager.
