After Wednesday night’s game against Watford, Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk proved he was the best defender in the world.
Liverpool won the game easily, by a score of 5-0, and Virgil van Dijk made a huge impact on both sides of the ball. As usual, his defense was spot on and he held another clean sheet, bringing the total up to 16 in the Premier League this season.
Once the lead was 3-0 after a Divock Origi goal, van Dijk decided he wanted to get into the fun and barreled into the box and headed home two stunning crosses coming from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson.

The balls were put on a plate for the big Dutchman, and his body size really makes it hard for anyone to defend him in the penalty box. It is a surprise he has not score more headed goals so far in a Liverpool shirt. Nevertheless, he got a double and clearly ended the argument for best defender in the world.
The other competitors would have to include Kalidou Koulibaly and Raphael Varane. None of that Sergio Ramos funny business. Earlier this year Mo Salah sliced up Koulibaly to give Liverpool a 1-0 win against Napoli which put them into the knockout rounds of the Champion’s League.
Last night, Raphael Varane scored against his own team, Real Madrid, in El Clasico. On the flip side, we have Big Virg, a flawless and towering center half that really can do it all. There has been a handful of times where Virgil had made a mistake all season.
As Liverpool fans the past five years have seen a lot of bad defending, and we expect those mistakes in big games and moments. With van Dijk we just do not get those, and after a year of having him I think we are all most accustomed to clean sheets and wins just because of how well he controls the defense.
Against Jurgen Klopp’s team if you can hold a clean sheet, there is probably a good chance we will score at some point. The 27 year-old defender has been pivotal in this, and its all the more reason why he is the best defender in the world. Jamie Webster, take us out.
