Liverpool legend Bruce Grobbelaar was an interesting character and this video about the goalkeeper makes for a fascinating watch.

The short clip, produced by Tifo, goes into the life and career of the stopper in really informative detail and is well worth a watch. It’s posted at the bottom of this article for you to enjoy!

Grobbelaar played 529 games for the Reds but his career was more than just wobbly legs and longevity. The South African born was a soldier first, a man conscripted into the army and sent to Rhodesia (modern day Zimbabwe) to fight in the war of independence. Grobbelaar killed.

But it could have been all so different though, as proposed moves to West Brom and Derby fell through. And how happy we are that they did, who knows what might have been.

This weren’t all plain sailing through. Imagine the scenes that greeted Grobbelaar when he joined Liverpool. This is a bloke who’d been playing for Durban City in South Africa, then in Canada and then for Crew Alex on loan – hardly a who’s who of professional outfits.

He’s also been signed to replace legend Ray Clemance, was a bit weird and had killed people in the bush fighting to continue white minority rule in Zim. A bit of a chequered history, isn’t it.

Not only that, but Grobbelaar’s eccentric behaviour also led to mistakes that led to matches being lost. You can imagine the rest of the squad would have found it hard to tolerate at times.

But, this tough start mutated in a glorious string of success as the goalkeeper won 13 trophies and would celebrate by opening bottles of beer with his eyelids.

Honestly, the vid is great and goes into the career of one of the best personalities in the sport. It’s less than 10 minutes long, and well worth your time.
