Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno is almost certain to leave Anfield in the summer transfer window with Atletico Madrid his likely destination.

Despite being atop the Premier League, Liverpool will still see a host of changes in the summer transfer window. One of the key departures will be Alberto Moreno who is likely to leave for Atletico Madrid on a free transfer according to reports.

The Spanish left back is out of contract in the summer and the Reds have made no moves to sign him to a new deal, making him a free agent.

A number of clubs have been looking at the defender with a handful of Premier League sides trailing behind Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Seeing two La Liga giants vying for his signature may be a surprise for Liverpool fans who now view Moreno as liability.

He has always been blessed with the speed and strength needed to succeed at the highest level and his technical ability has never been an issue.

His troubles at Anfield have been mental and tactical – suffering from lapses of concentration and bad decision-making. Those get punished in the Premier League every week but there is more leeway in La Liga for a full back to not be the best defender in the world. Which he certainly isn’t.

The 26-year-old joined the Reds in the summer of 2014 with an exciting reputation after impressing the Sevilla side that won the Europa League in 2013/14.

He featured in his first season at Anfield and was a  regular in Jurgen Klopp’s first half season at the club. However his mistakes in the Europa League – against his former club – in 2016 pushed him to the periphery. He was then replaced by James Milner the following season before the arrival of Andrew Robertson in 2017.
