Liverpool transfer target Pascal Gross has claimed that it’s an honour to be linked with a move to Anfield in the summer transfer window.

In an interview with Goal, the Brighton midfielder responded to rumours linking him with the Reds in an enthusiastic manner.

Gross is in his second Premier League season and has been an important member of Chris Hughton’s side since he arrived from FC Ingolstadt in July 2017.

The German missed eight games earlier in the season because of an ankle injury, but once recovered was thrust straight back into the Seagull’s side and started 14 out of the next 15 fixtures.

Back in January it was reported that Liverpool were considering making a transfer offer for the 27-year-old, and when Gross was asked what he thought of the story, he said: “Of course it is an honour when such rumours arise, but I have not heard anything concrete.”

Any time the Reds are linked with a midfielder it has to be treated with a healthy does of scepticism. I mean, what does Klopp want with Gross when he already has Fabinho, Gini Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner to chose from?

Milner’s contract situation may be the subject of some dispute and his age could play against him – but the rest are high quality players with experience at the highest level. Gross just doesn’t fit, sorry.

And that list ignores Marko Grujic, who is doing well in the Bundesliga for Hertha Berlin. Klopp has midfielders coming out of his ears!
