Liverpool starlet Bobby Adekanye is set to leave the club and join Lazio on a free transfer at the end of his contract – but where did it all go wrong?

Respected Reds journo Neil Jones tweeted that Adekanye was nearly ready to finalize his deal with the Serie A side after a few disappointing years on Merseyside.

The Dutch youth international joined Liverpool the Barcelona set up, after being a part of Ajax and PSV sides before that.

Earlier in the year the Daily Mail reported that Lazio denied links between the two parties, but it now appears as if the rumours were true and a deal will be done.

According to Jones, Adekanye does have raw ability in parts but is miles away from being good enough to play for Liverpool senior sides.

To be fair to the lad, he’s got a lot of youth competition ahead of him and this move is probably the best thing for his career.

Bobby Duncan and Paul Glatzel are tearing it up for the U18 and U23 sides and both have gone beyond 20 goals for the season, while Rhian Brewster is still highly rated and will be pushing for a first team place next season.

Jones also noted that Adekanye knew his opportunities would be limited at Liverpool and wanted to move somewhere who could give him a chance. Because, as the journalist said, the forward needs to improve on a lot and sitting in the Premier League 2 squad won’t do that for him.

Poor finishing and vision have hampered his time at the club, but that is something that can be worked on by a combination of coaches and increased game time.

So you’d have to say that competition ahead of him, a lack of senior minutes and opportunities meant Adekanye couldn’t convert his initial talent and potential into anything serious at Liverpool.
