Questions have been asked as Liverpool star Gini Wijnaldum broke the shackles and channelled his inner Frank Lampard as the Netherlands beat Belarus.

Wijnaldum caused problems in attack as the Dutch easily went past their opponents. Gini scored the second after a great burst into the penalty area but that’s not the way Jurgen Klopp wants him to play for the Reds.

In his debut Premier League season for Newcastle United, the midfielder was the star of the show as he scored 11 goals and assisted five others under the ill-fated reign of Steve McLaren.

But now Klopp has Wijnaldum sitting deeper, which completely takes away his ability to drive into the box late and make those Lampard like late runs from the edge of the area.

Some fans who observed this different style have questioned why the 28-year-old never seems to do it for Liverpool – and there’s your answer in a nutshell.

While it would definitely be good to see the Dutchman play like that, Klopp has developed him into a stronger all round player with a deep tactical understanding of how the German wants his team to operate.

To allow Wijnaldum to operate outside the confines of the system would be to throw the system away. Everyone would want a piece of the action in this way. Chaos would reign.

With only nine league goals since his arrival three seasons ago, Gini definitely isn’t being used to the best of his attacking abilities. But at the end of the day, the gaffer has a way of playing and that needs to be respected.

All we can do now is enjoy the show Wijnaldum is putting on for the Netherlands and hope he and Virgil van Dijk can come through the international break unscathed and ready for Tottenham.
