There’s agony for Liverpool midfielder Herbie Kane as a groin injury has ended his season with only six weeks left of the 20182019 campaign.

Kane has been on loan with Doncaster Rovers since the summer and has started 84% of their League One games, but 90min.com has reported that the 20-year-old could have kicked his last ball in anger until 2019/2020.

The midfielder has recently signed new terms with the Reds and has been tipped for big things by Steven Gerrard, so this news will come as a blow for the youngster.

With seven goals and nine assists in 41 matches across all competitions, this has been a highly fruitful first foray into senior football for Kane – who must now look towards a Championship loan deal for next season.

Because he’s been playing in League One, Kane’s progress has flown under the radar a little bit. When talking about midfielders who could come back into the squad and do a job, it’s Marko Grujic who gets mentioned ahead of the former Bristol City trainee.

Kane will need to have a productive pre-season if he is going to give manager Jurgen Klopp something to think about in regards to his plans for the next campaign. While the injury isn’t thought to be serious, it’s not unheard of for things to go wrong with recovery that have a more lasting impact.

Liverpool have got a number of youngsters out on loan, and while most will come back to the club and be moved on, there are a small amount who could push on for first team honours.

Ryan Kent is probably amongst those who will be sold, but Reds fans are desperate for Harry Wilson to get a chance to prove himself.

Could Kane be the next Academy lad to have a crack at the first team?
