As Liverpool prepare to take on Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon, they should be mindful that this is the win that could propel them to the Premier League title.

The Reds are currently on top of the league, but second placed Manchester City are only two points behind them and have a game in hand. At their current rate of points getting, you can expect City to win that fixture.

And this one will be a tricky match for Liverpool. Despite their chronic underinvestment, Mauricio Pochettino has done a fine job with Spurs – and anyone who thinks he’s overrated because of a lack of trophies just doesn’t get it.

But enough about Poch, we’re here to talk about the Reds.

Tottenham are a tough team with some very good players. They nearly ruined Dejan Lovren’s season in the second half of 2017/2018 when he was dragged at half time after being given a thorough seeing to. And it’s for that reason that a win could provide the moral boost and confidence needed to come out the other side of a nerve shredding Premier League title race on top.

After all that chat about Liverpool holding their nerve and the international break taking the sting out of their tail following an excellent win against Bayern Munich, winning would be the perfect return to league action.

These big games are about throwing down a marker, both to the squad and to the rest of the chasing pack.

Thankfully, the Reds’ injury list is nearly done to zero. Jurgen Klopp has spoken about how he expects to have a full complement of players ready to choose from, which means Trent Alexander-Arnold and Xherdan Shaqiri have recovered from the knocks that kept them out of their international sides.
