Liverpool made a mistake signing Virgil van Dijk says Richard Keys in another pointless outburst from the disgraced football commentator.

I would happily forget about Richard Keys but his stupid comments about Liverpool Football Club arrive in my social media timelines every few weeks or so. This one about Virgil van Dijk looks more stupid by the day.

The beIN soccer host was commenting on a story from John Collins who was at Celtic as assistant manager while van Dijk was there as a player. The former Fulham player says that all the big English sides came to look at the impressive Dutchman.

The way he tells the story, Liverpool and the other top-six suitors were put off by questions over the defender’s attitude; unsure if he had the mentality to play at the top-level.

He highlights Liverpool in particular as his former Scotland international teammate Gary McAllister was on the staff at Anfield under Brendan Rodgers.

As the top sides dawdled on a deal, Southampton liked what they saw and brought him to the South coast for a reasonable £12 million transfer fee. It was three years later that Jurgen Klopp made him the most expensive player in the club’s history paying The Saints £75 million for him.

Richard Keys sees this as an opportunity to diss Liverpool, claiming the Reds made a £63 million mistake. But that presumes everything proceeds as it did. Does van Dijk develop as well under Brendan Rodgers or was Ronald ‘The Red’ Koeman instrumental in the development of his countryman at Southampton?

You can take that further and say does Rodgers even get fired if he signs van Dijk? Every Liverpool fan is glad Jurgen Klopp is at the wheel.

A Champions League final in his initial half season and a title challenge in his first full campaign means there is not a single Liverpool fan worried about that £63 million.
