Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards will be on high alert as top transfer target Timo Werner opens the door to offers after rejecting RB Leipzig contract.

Liverpool sporting chief Michael Edwards maybe reshaping his plans for the next week or two after confirmation from RB Leipzig that Timo Werner will not sign a new deal with them, effectively putting him on the transfer market.

The German international’s contract expires at the end of the 2019/20 season but his decision not to renew will force Leipzig to sell him this summer if they want to maximize his value to the club.

CEO of RB Leipzig Oliver Mintzlaff was quoted as saying:  “Timo Werner will not sign a new contract. We want to extend it with him, but he signaled that he would rather not extend it.”

That puts Liverpool alongside Bayern Munich as the joint favorites for his signature. He has been a chief target for the Reds over this last year as Jurgen Klopp looks to add another top forward to his roster.

The manager has publicly stated his admiration of Werner and has a history of sending Michael Edwards to get the players he wants.

There has been rumors that the striker already has agreed personal terms with Bayern Munich there being no offer from the Bundesliga champions.

I would still put my money on him going to Bayern because of recent comments about how Liverpool won’t spend huge amounts of money this summer, even if they fall just short in the title race.

However the Reds have shown the willingness to move mountains to get a player they really want as the did with Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker. It will come down to how much Klopp wants Timo Werner and how much he wants to trust in Divock Origi and Rhian Brewster next season.
