Liverpool fans are clamoring for the transfer of Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt after his match winning display in the Champions League and the player admits it may happen.

There are always young football stars that are labelled the next big thing. But not all of them score match winning goals to take their teams to the semi-finals of the Champions League. The performance of Matthijs de Ligt for Ajax last night has Liverpool fans buzzing about a potential transfer.

Within the Reds fanbase there is growing desire for the Dutch phenom to recreate his international partnership with Virgil van Dijk at Anfield. The best defender in the world and the best young defender in the world. You can’t help but be excited.

However with every incredible display in Europe’s top competition de Ligt’s value rises along with the fans excitement. He is comfortably valued at £75 million at present – the same fee the Reds shelled out for van Dijk.

Does that transfer fee make a move for him prohibitive for Liverpool? Perhaps but the player is not ruling out a move to Merseyside.

Only a month ago he was quotes as saying about a move to Liverpool: “It could happen.”

It’s the hope that kills you!

He continued claiming: “They are a great side, and Van Dijk is there, and I learn a lot from playing with him for the national team.”

Barcelona are the heavy favorites for his signature but they have already signed up his teammate midfielder Frenkie de Jong to arrive in the summer for £50 million. It is not certain that the Catalans will stump up the cash for de Ligt as well.

That could leave Liverpool as a preferred destination for the defender. The club have already shown they are willing to spend heavily for a top player who will improve the first team. With every passing week it is more apparent that de Ligt is that level of quality. Like the player himself, I think this one could happen.
