Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has been directly responsible for 24 of the points accumulated by the side this season.

Research conducted by the Independent’s Miguel Delaney shows that Salah has scored the decision goal to hand the Reds more points than anyone else in the Premier League.

Of his nearest competitors, nobody comes close to matching this incredible tally. With 12 points earned, Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero comes second on the list while Sadio Mane and James Milner occupy third and fifth.

Out of that haul, Salah has only taken one penalty to aid him. Both of Milner’s decisive goals were from the spot, while all of Mane’s were from open play.

Defender Virgil van Dijk was recently crowned the PFA Player of the Season and there is no doubt that he’s been an absolute colossus this campaign – but does this show that Salah may have deserved to win the gong?

Van Dijk is the first defender to win it since John Terry in 2005 and there’s a reason for that: it’s very hard to take the outcome of a match from defence consistently enough to be voted as the best player of the season by your peers.

Goalscorers and attacking players make the headlines, they pick up awards and they get recognition because their contributions are quantified a lot easier than that of van Dijk. And so while you can make a case for Salah to win the POTY based on picking up 24 points for Liverpool, that shouldn’t mean that he does win it.

What it does mean is that the Egyptian should be in line for admiration from the stands and recognition that he’s a class player who changes games.
