White then called Jurgen Klopp’s side unlucky for being matched against two of football’s biggest ‘juggernauts’ in Pep Guardiola and Lionel Messi.
While Guardiola has been knocked out the Champions League, he has overseen an incredible run of results for Manchester City and now could pip Liverpool to the title by just one point after losing more games than them.
And Messi looks like he may haul Barcelona to the European title by himself. The Reds had the better of their semi-final until the Argentine took things by the scruff of the neck and scored twice to give his team a 3-0 advantage.
But in the instant-result obsessed, social media driven world this wouldn’t be enough for some people – added White. Being a runner up in the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League and League Cup doesn’t taste the same as winning something, anything.
Klopp is being criticised for a lack of trophies, but the club now has status. A reputation as one of Europe’s elite, which is better than winning the League Cup – continued White. However, the journalist concluded, next summer and next season would be vital for the club.
