Liverpool are being linked to a transfer for former Manchester United flop Memphis Depay after being tracked by scouts and social media moves.

You may think there is no way that Liverpool would be interested in a player who failed at Manchester United but there are substantial transfer rumors that the Reds are in for Lyon attacker Memphis Depay.

The Dutch international is having another excellent season at the Ligue 1 side. He has racked up 17 goals and 13 assists from the central forward position to follow on from last season’s career high numbers of 22 goals and 16 assists.

At 25-years-old he is just hitting his prime and Jurgen Klopp would be a great manager to push him into the next stratosphere much like he has already done with Mohamed Salah at a similar age.

There are three things that make me think this is a viable transfer this summer. The first is that Liverpool have been sending scouts to watch Lyon in the latter parts of this season. That could of course be to see Houssem AouarTanguy Ndombele or even Nabil Fekir.

However the social media push by Gini Wijnaldum makes me think it is Depay who is the one Liverpool are prioritizing. The Reds’ midfielder has not been subtle in his courting of his countryman.

His time at Manchester United shouldn’t hurt him being received by the fans. He was hardly a hero at Old Trafford. After being signed my Louis van Gaal in 2015 he failed to make a significant impact before being totally shunned by Jose Mourinho in the 2016/17 season before being sold to Lyon.

It is rare that a player will play for both Manchester United and Liverpool during their careers. The last two players to do that were Paul Ince and Michael Owen. And Memphis Depay is going the right direction; on the up to Anfield!
