Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain deal shows club ain’t messin
The news that Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been handed a year’s extension on his contract shows that the club ain’t messin’.
Oxlade-Chamberlain played less than 20 minutes of first team football this season yet the brainboxes at the top have decided to top up his deal to 2023. That’s good for all parties concerned.
Despite this yawning absence of a season, the Ox has shown enough talent and application and sheer game changing ability to earn that extra time on Merseyside. And Jurgen Klopp clearly rates him.
This news is in line with recent deals that all bring several senior and important players in line with each other. They’ve all committed some of the best parts of their professional lives to the club, and Liverpool will benefit from this.

And, if we want to take a slightly cynical look at things, it also protects Oxlade-Chamberlain’s value and will allow Michael Edwards to extract even more cash for the England international should he decided to cash his chips.
Edwards and the board can hold their hands up high and with honest to God poker faces claim that the Ox was never for sale, is never for sale, and would only be sold for a figure that couldn’t be rejected.
But nobody is suggesting that’s the case, it’s just useful upshot.
The midfielder is entering his prime years now. Liverpool have invested in him. Klopp has shown him faith.
The German took it easy, made sure the Ox understood things fully and then unleashed him to devastating effect. Stand by for next season, because it’ll be a good one.
This is a similarly smart move by the club, who are giving themselves back the year that fate so cruelly stole from them that night in Rome when Oxlade-Chamberlain’s ACL snapped so violently.
