Liverpool fans are re-living Xabi Alonso’s outrageous assist to Luis Garcia against Sunderland and can’t quite believe how the master pulled it off.
Alonso was an absolute wizard whenever he pulled on the Reds shirt, but this one pass has been dug out of the archives and will melt your eyes.
In fact, that game the Spaniard had a worldie and provided another assist – this time for Steven Gerrard, that was technically just as good.
He is only credited with nine assists for Liverpool in 210 appearances, but the midfielder was worth so much more than that over the course of his five year Anfield stay.

Liverpool signed Alonso from Sociedad for £14.40 million and managed to double their money when Real Madrid came in for him in 2009. Those few years were magical as the Spaniard helped control and orchestrate games from his position as a holding midfielder.
That pass, which you can see as a video below, is outrageous and helps to illustrate the skill set that Alonso could bring to the game.
Now Liverpool have good midfielders but when you think back to that axis of Gerrard, Javier Mascherano and Alonso you have to wonder if we’ll see a better one or what Jurgen Klopp could have got out of those three.
And that’s not doing a disservice to the current crop. All our midfielders are fine players who have had good seasons – and there’s no reason why they can’t reach the top of their game. But those three were truly masters of the art and went on to have amazing careers.
In other news, Liverpool are on the cusp of pulling off the signing of young Dutch central defender Sepp van den Berg.

Despite the fact that van den Berg is only 17-years-old, his side PEC Zwolle have already handed him 16 Eredivisie appearances and the Reds face competition from Bayern Munich and Ajax for his signature.
