Have Ajax paved the way for Liverpool to sign their £40.5 million rated star David Neres by bringing in Quincy Promes from Sevilla?

The Dutch giants have spent £14 million to bring Promes back to the Eredivisie after one spell in La Liga, said Goal, in a move that gives Erik ten Hag’s team additional cover in the forward line.

After scoring 66 goals and assisting 34 in 134 appearances for Spatak Moscow, Sevilla came calling but decided to cut their losses on the Dutch international and sold him to Ajax after just one campaign.

Liverpool have been linked with 22-year-old Neres, who plays across the front three and pretty evenly split the amount of time he featured on the left and right wing. Ajax are good at ensuring they’re never caught short when a key player departs, and this smells of forward planning.

The Reds are slightly weak in their cover across the front three and Neres fits the bill as a young, versatile forward who can be developed further.

Ajax, who reached the Champions League semi-final before losing to Tottenham, currently have a full compliment of wingers. You’d expect them to sell one of Neres or Hakim Ziyech in order to make space in the squad for Promes, who is their third most expensive signing of all time.

Another option for the former Spartak man would be to play through the middle, and here he could expect to feature more as ten Hag only has the old Klaas Jan-Huntelaar or the promising but hit-and-miss Kasper Dolberg as ‘proper’ forwards.

The transfer rumours linking Nicolas Pepe to Liverpool show that Jurgen Klopp isn’t afraid to spend big on the right target, even if that player would be occupying a rotation role.

Neres would probably cost a similar amount and Ajax are good at extracting maximum value for their talented young starts, but the Promes deal indicates a club who are planning for the departure of someone.
