Liverpool could be the talk of the football world if Sunday Times journalist Jonathan Northcroft is right and they spend a world record transfer fee this summer.
Not much is happening for Liverpool on the surface of this transfer window. However there could be some big plans afoot under the radar according to respected journo Jonathan Northcroft.
The Sunday Times writer was speaking to The Transfer Window podcast about how Liverpool are going about their transfer business four years into Jurgen Klopp’s revolution at the club.

He says: “(Virgil) Van Dijk and Alisson (Becker) came for world-record fees. I think is a trend that we’ll see continuing. They can afford to look at the cream now.”
The Reds shelled out a world record fee for a defender in van Dijk who has transformed the defense after he arrived in January 2018. They soon paired that move with signing Alisson for a world-record fee for a goalkeeper that summer.
Northcroft believes that those are not isolated, one-off acquisitions but the beginning of a trend he sees as the culmination of Michael Edwards’ excellent dealings in the transfer market.
“This is a sign of Liverpool’s evolution; they’ve been building towards getting themselves in this position probably for six years now… Now they’re in a position where they can just pick off – they feel – the top players that they need at the top end of the market.”
His assessment is that the club is only looking at the elite end of the transfer market to improve the first team. That is one reason there has been relatively little speculation this summer – there are only a handful of players who could improve this Liverpool side.
Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Kylian Mbappe would surely command more than the world-record £200 million transfer fee PSG paid for Neymar in 2017. The Frenchman cost the Ligue 1 side £160 million in that same summer and he has since won two league titles and the World Cup.
I’m convinced Liverpool will do one of two things this summer; basically nothing or a total madness. Northcroft has me leaning towards the latter.
