Liverpool have had an underwhelming preseason campaign and managed to lose three games against good sides.

The Reds have played six friendlies and accumulated a record of two wins, three losses and one draw. Two of the wins have come against Bradford City and Tranmere. With losses against top clubs such as Dortmund, Sevilla, Napoli and a draw with Sporting, is it time to hit the panic button?

First thing is first, these are only friendlies and the lineups have shown this. Backup players as well as youngsters have been making appearances on the pitch, so this is one reason for the results.

Although this can be taken into consideration, could you question the level of depth for Liverpool?

With only a couple of transfers coming in this year in the form of Sepp van den Berg and Harvey Elliot, it seems the Reds are focused more on developing youth and selling or loaning players. Could this be a mistake? With teams around Europe stockpiling veteran and greater talent, are Liverpool falling behind?

Tottenham have so far added midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, Barcelona have added Antoine Griezmann and Frenkie de Jong to their ranks, Juventus have bought Matthjis de Ligt to their club and Manchester City have signed Rodri.

These are all top forces in Europe, with the latter even pipping Liverpool to the Premier League title last season.

All strong forces and all seeing where they need improvement and fixing this issue. Are the Reds dead set that this squad can repeat their success while others have improved?

Only time will tell if these friendlies are any indicator of the failures or success of Jurgen Klopp’s team.

But one thing is for certain, with the Community Shield final this Sunday and the Premier League season creeping ever so closer, maybe Liverpool might want to try and reinforce their squad with a little added improvement or stay pat and hope they can beat the improved teams around Europe.
