Liverpool watched their biggest competitors spend big this summer transfer window, but should they have done more?

Harry Maguire, Nicolas Pepe, and Rodri are just a few of the big names who were snapped up by top six clubs this summer, and that doesn’t even including the buys that Tottenham made to improve.

With all of the big spending that occurred in this transfer window, one does have to wonder, what about the Reds?

Liverpool were not particularly silent, there were some moves made despite them being minor. But the purchases of centre-back Sepp van den Berg and midfielder Harvey Elliot are more geared towards the future as none of these players have yet reached 18.

Jurgen Klopp also added goalkeeper Adrian, a move that was forced on the club after Simon Mignolet was allowed to depart. Adrian will provide a back-up to Alisson Becker.

Now with moves focused more on the future and depth, does this put Liverpool in a bad situation? With every major club in the Premier League stacking their squads with players who will start right away, as a Reds fan it is troubling to view from afar.

Despite the success of last season, that was last season. It’s hard to stand still in any sport, teams get better and improve all the time and Liverpool seems to be banking on the idea that the squad of 2018/2019 can still stack up against the newly improved sides across the league.

We can not call how this season will play out. Liverpool does still have it’s fair share of superstars, so it is not like there were many weaknesses on the roster.

But with every club spending big and getting much better in most facets it’s hard to swallow that this same lineup can stack up against better clubs going forward.

It’s a nervous feeling as a Red fan to see every major club loading up and improving areas of weakness. In the world of football you never know what might happen, and hopefully Liverpool standing still in the transfer window will be a stroke of genius.
