Liverpool 2-1 Southampton: Van Dijk pulls the coolest clearance you’ll ever see
Liverpool beat Southampton 2-1 at St Mary’s but Virgil van Dijk probably pulled off the coolest clearance you’ll ever see.
The Reds went 2-0 up thanks to goals from Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino before former Liverpool lad Danny Ings grabbed one back after an error from Adrian.
Joel Matip was handed his second start of the season as he lined up next to van Dijk in place of Joe Gomez, and in the second half the Dutchman showed why he is so valuable to Jurgen Klopp.
Because van Dijk isn’t just a colossal unit, he’s also great with his feet and incredibly calm under pressure. He’s a leader at the back and he’s changed how the Reds are viewed across the world.

Follow this link to see the coolest clearance you’ll witness this 2019/2020 campaign as van Dijk saw the ball drop over his right shoulder, about half way into the Liverpool half.
Nathan Redmond, a quick attacker, was on his back and providing pressure for Southampton, but that didn’t mess up Big Virg’s head – oh no.
Instead he let the ball drop, stuck out a lazy toe and flicked it first time back over his shoulder and around his body into the path of James Milner – who took it away from the danger areas.
Honestly the level of skill van Dijk needed to do that was incredibly. The coolness under pressure, the vision to know Milner was around and the skill to execute it was amazing – and that’s part of the reason why he’s on of the world’s best.
There are plenty of defenders who would have stuffed that up, or who would have let the ball bounce and then had to get into a foot race with Redmond. That would have been bad, and potentially deadly.
But not Big Virg. All hail Big Virg!
