Liverpool took on Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team just three days after lifting the UEFA Super Cup in Istanbul.

Sadio Mane broke the deadlock for the Reds just before half-time. Roberto Firmino scored his first goal of the season to double the lead for the Champions League winners.

Southampton pulled one back after former Liverpool man Danny Ings capitalised on an error made by Adrian. Ings had another chance to equalise when Yan Valery sent a low cross from the right. However, he missed the goal by inches.

At the end, it was a 2-1 victory for Klopp’s lads which took their Premier League winning streak to 11 matches.

Following the match, the Liverpool manager was all praise for his team’s performance. Speaking to the club’s official website, Klopp said: “Southampton is a good team, they defend well. This afternoon it was difficult.”

Despite the quality of the opposition, Klopp said he was pleased with the fitness levels of his squad.

”I was really impressed with how fresh we looked, in the start especially, just how good we were,” he added.

The gaffer also defended new stopper Adrian, who made a bad mistake to allow Ings to grab one back with less than 10 minutes to go before the end of the game.

"“Adrian thought ‘I played really well, so maybe I have to make the same mistake as Ali did!’ and kept the game a little bit open. We kept the result, I think we deserved the three points and I’m completely fine with that.”"

Liverpool fans will hope that the moments where the defence looked a bit shaky was because of the fact that the players had a big game three days back. The backline were overall good but a more improved performance will be needed from them in upcoming matches if Liverpool are to win the league this season.

The Reds’ next match is a toughie as they take on Arsenal at Anfield. The Gunners have won their first two Premier League matches, doing so for the first time in 10 years. After beating Newcastle, Unai Emery’s side bested Burnley 2-1 at the Emirates.
