Liverpool throw-in coach Thomas Gronnemark feels pity not anger towards ‘unprofessional’ Andy Gray after he criticised the Dane.

When news filtered through that the Reds had appointed Gronnemark, Gray and his fellow pundits were less than kind with their reaction. But as The Athletic (subscription required) reports, the Dane doesn’t harbour much resentment.

“I actually felt a little bit sorry for Andy Gray,” he said.

And as a set of words that would endear him to a set of supporters instantly, Gronnemark pretty much hit the nail on the head there. Gray isn’t much liked around the Liverpool camp, and the Dane shedding some light on how he feels will sit very well with them.

Gray shredded the club for appointing a throw-in coach, but he’s a successful coach who gets results and has had many clubs in the Premier League trying to tap that knowledge base.

As well as that, Gronnemark almost managed to do the pundit’s job better than he did it himself. Instead of laugh and sort and carry on like a bloke down the pub after a few jars, it would have been better if Gray did a segment on it and asked why Jurgen Klopp wanted the coach in the first place.

“I think it was unprofessional,” the Dane continued to say when quizzed about his reaction to what the beIn Sports pundits thought.

Gronnemark trod a very fine line between pouring shade on the Scot and sounding very philosophical and forgiving. And the fact that he did it should make want Liverpool fans find out more about the coach, who comes across as a great guy.

His work is already beginning to bare fruit as Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson and Joe Gomez have taken his message on board, while goals against Southampton, Manchester United and Bournemouth can be credited to smart throw-in work.

A man who helps Liverpool win games and takes down Andy Gray. That we can all get behind.
