Liverpool have been urged by a national newspaper to pursue Barcelona full back Sergio Roberto in the next transfer window to add depth to the squad.

Liverpool Football Club could well be in the transfer market for a new full back in the next transfer window and one national newspaper thinks they should look at Barcelona star Sergio Roberto.

The Express highlighted three players they think manager Jurgen Klopp should scout during the next few months; Sergio Roberto, Kai Havertz of Bayer Leverkusen and Dusan Tadic of Ajax.

The Reds are unlikely to make a huge splash on a forward in January – all indications are they are lining up a big move for next summer. However, the shortage of options at full back could see them dip into the market to bolster the defense.

Roberto is seen as good flexible option by the Express as he can cover both the left and right side and would be able to offer attacking quality as well as defensive experience for both flanks.

However, his contract runs until 2022 and would not be available cheaply. It seems unlikely that the club would spend big money on a backup full back who turns 28-years-old before the season finishes.

Add to that the club’s rocky transfer history with Barcelona over deals for Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho over the last five years and it is hard to see how this one could happen.

The need for more depth at left back was highlighted yesterday in the defeat to Napoli in the Champions League. Andrew Robertson had to pass a late fitness test and was involved in both goals conceded late in the game.

The manager was almost forced to start him with no other senior option at the position and James Milner needed to rotate in midfield. Hopefully this can be addressed in the next transfer window.
