Liverpool are being very cautious with their approach to the controversy surrounding the eligibility of Pedro Chirivella for the Carabao Cup.

Liverpool Football Club are being very careful as they approach the controversy of Pedro Chirivella being ineligible for last week’s Carabao Cup match with MK Dons.

The Reds were 2-0 winners over the League One side and Chirivella made a second half appearance from the bench, replacing Naby Keita after 63 minutes. However, it now appears that the midfielder may not have had international clearance to play.

There is a disagreement between the club and the FA about who is to blame as Liverpool believe they sent in an application for his clearance in July. It seems that the club did not have confirmation of his eligibility and will be found at fault for the error.

There are a range of options for the FA to pursue for punishment for the offense. They could simply give the club a warning or issue them a fine. The most drastic option is to kick Liverpool out of the competition and give Arsenal a bye to the fifth round. The two sides are due to meet at Anfield on October 29th.

The club sent a statement to the Liverpool ECHO revealing how cautiously they approaching the issue as they hope to avoid being kicked out of the competition:

“The club are aware of a potential administrative issue pertaining to one of our players. We are working with the relevant authorities in order to establish the facts of the matter and will be making no further comment until this process is complete.”

The Reds are getting ready for another big week with a Champions League group game against Red Bull Salzburg and the visit of Leicester City in the Premier League at the weekend.
