RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner can be another one of Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp’s Russian dolls if he accepts a move to Anfield this summer.

Well all know the Reds have got their ear to the ground and their nose in the trough when it comes to sourcing transfer bargains and Werner could be another in the long line of end-of-season deals.

The narrative is well rehearsed by now: Liverpool identify who they want to sign, they wait and they do their due diligence and then they pounce for the best possible price. When you combine that with the negotiating skills of Michael Edwards, it produces a stream of cut-price deals that that are all declared the bargain of the century.

Like Russian dolls, they consecutively pop out one by one, and just when you think you’ve reached the end there’s another and another and another.

It has been reported by the Mirror that Werner is available for £30 million due to a release clause in his recently signed contract. We’ve had this back-and-forth with the German before and Liverpool haven’t moved for the lad, but if we follow the pattern they’ve set this could be the summer it all changes.

Historically any side who wants to buy the best of the Bundesliga would have to compete with Bayern Munich, but they want to spend big to bring Leroy Sane to Bavaria when he recovers from his injury and there might be some wiggle room for Liverpool to work with.

The one thing holding Werner back would be the amount of games he’s guaranteed to play. At Leipzig he knows he’s the main man. He plays consistently and scores goals regularly – even if he’s yet to better the 21 league goals he hit in 2016-2017. Even so, Werner has started 2019/2020 well and has five in seven as well as two in two in the Champions League.

At Anfield, it would be a little different. He would play second fiddle to Roberto Firmino, or not play at all sometimes. Liverpool also are well stocked across their forward positions and maybe aren’t as inclined to buy big in that position – they certainly wouldn’t be as inclined as they were last season before Divock Origi was handed a new contract.

But Werner remains a good player with bags of potential. At £30 million, he could easily be the latest in a long line of Klopp’s Russian dolls.
