Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk prevented Moise Kean from scoring for Everton last night with a clever tactic caught on a video replay.

Liverpool dominated the Mersyside derby last night but Everton had a glorious chance to pull a goal back and make for a nervy finish. However, Virgil van Dijk pulled out a sneaky trick to stop Moise Kean scoring his golden chance.

The first half was a blistering display as the Reds led 4-2 after tearing open the Toffees while giving them a couple of sloppy goals to keep their hopes alive.

In contrast, the second half was more subdued with Liverpool looking to control the game and see it to victory. They largely did that, but there came a moment that put Liverpool fans’ hearts in their mouths.

Sadio Mane had just missed an excellent opportunity to make it 5-2 and finish the game at the other end before Everton broke away. A chance fell to highly rated Italian teenager Moise Kean.

Virgil van Dijk had just lost him for a second – a rare blip – and called upon some tactics from the dark arts to prevent Kean from scoring.

He didn’t foul him – that would have meant a red card and a suspension. Instead, you can see on a replay that the Dutch defender screams in his ear, right at the second he takes his shot, which drags wide.

It’s another example of van Dijk match smartness and his insatiable desire to win.
